Why seek counseling/therapy?
Therapy is often sought when people experience distress in their lives that becomes difficult to manage or becomes unmanageable. People can feel “stuck” and may not know how to become “unstuck.” For example, they may be embroidered in difficult relationships, have difficulty with parenting challenging children, grieving the loss of loved ones, etc.
What can I expect from therapy?
Therapy will aim to address the concerns that you introduce in sessions. Therapists are trained to assist people in identifying and/or clarifying areas of concern, setting goals to address them & finding solutions that will work for each person.Your first session will be an information-gathering time and an opportunity to get to know you & for you to get to know your Therapist. Relevant information from both your current life & past history will be discussed to better assess the kind(s) of goals you’d like to focus on. Sessions generally run 45-50 minutes, with the initial session requiring 60 minutes.
There are benefits to seeking and participating in therapy. This can include having an objective person helping to process your concerns in a non-judgmental fashion. You can also learn new information and garner support that will assist you in making decisions/choices/changes in your life. You will develop new and/or stronger coping skills and thus be better equipped to face situations that arise in your life. It is generally a positive experience when symptoms of distress are reduced or alleviated.
Some people experience discomfort or an increased amount of distress when participating in therapy. This is because some of the difficult issues/topics in their lives can be brought to light and when this is focused on, it can initially be a difficult or scary process. If a person works through these issues and feelings with the help of his/her Therapist, he/she will generally move from an uncomfortable/distressing experience to a positive one.
